What dosage of CBD oil should you take?

Table Of Contents

The benefits of CBD are now widely discussed and recognised, but how much should you take to feel the effects?

CBD can help to:

  • Reduce anxiety and depression
  • Improve sleep
  • Soothe pain and inflammation
  • Improve heart health
  • Improve symptoms of IBS
  • Reduce seizures in people with epilepsy.

Regardless of what you are trying to treat finding the correct dosage is key; if you don’t meet the dosage, the CBD may not have the chance to work. It can be difficult to work out how much you should take, so we have created this guide to help you work this out.

How much CBD do I need?

The amount of CBD you need to take depends on a range of factors, including:

  • Body weight
  • The condition you are aiming to treat
  • The concentration of CBD in your product

In short terms, there are a lot of variables that go into deciding how much CBD to take – and unfortunately it is up to you to work out what the dosage is for your specific product. If you have been prescribed CBD from your doctor, make sure you stick to their recommendation. This is especially important if you’re taking a prescription medication containing CBD.

If your doctor doesn’t provide a recommendation, the best way to use CBD is to start with a lower dosage and gradually increase it. This could mean starting with 20-40mg per day and increasing this week on week. You can continue to do this until you feel the CBD has begun to effectively treat your symptoms. Recent guidance suggests not to exceed 70mg CBD orally per day.

Calculating CBD dosage

Some products, like CBD gummies, capsules or pills can tell you how much is in a single serving. If you’re using CBD oil, this will likely come in a dropper bottle. The packaging might specify how much CBD is in a single drop, and from there you can work out how many drops you need to use.

It can be difficult to work out exactly how much CBD is in one drop; packaging often specifies the total amount in the entire bottle, but not the amount that will be in a single drop.

With CBD e-liquids, you will see the strength and content of CBD and not a specific dosage. Again, it’s up to you to gradually increase the dosage to see what works.

Is it possible to take too much CBD?

There have been multiple reviews and assessments of CBD and its effects, and a 2011 study on the safety and side effects of CBD found that continuous use of CBD even in high doses is tolerated well by humans. A 2017 update to this review confirmed this.

CBD has very few known side effects, however when they do occur, they usually include appetite changes, fatigue, and diarrhoea. Be careful when using CBD to keep an eye out for these symptoms, as they could indicate that your dosage is too high.

Always be sure to purchase from a legitimate seller, too. Fake and low-quality CBD products can be dangerous. Here at Canavape, we use only pharmaceutical grade CBD and naturally derived cannabinoids in our products.
